"Snow" Crossword

What we should have had before and now.

 Spring is Coming,

Goodbye Winter.

By: Tiny (Grade 6)

Well if you don’t agree with me, you may as well look outside because frankly, there’s no snow. This is a very bad thing to those of you who like to play in the snow, toboggan and skate. Unless we have a raging blizzard that will give us at least one foot of snow, spring is sadly around the corner. Don't get me wrong, though. I mean, spring is wonderful and beautiful with all the gorgeous new plants and flowers and that fresh air...but think. We didn't actually get winter!

Sure, it’s nice to play outside in the warmth and brightness of spring and summer, but the biggest snow we’ve had was as high as half a boot (standing up with no person wearing it.) and that is just bad. Global warming, people! I believe that is only one of the reasons, though. On this event, you may notice lots of people who want winter to end and spring to start (cough, cough) adults. I will ask you this: Do you really want winter to end?

And I know I know…there’s snow outside now. But will it last? Probably not. PLUS it’s not good snow. Not good snow at all. Why, it barely goes past your foot. Well, sure. Sure, we had fantabulous snow this week in February. But how long did the fabulousness last? Three days.

I think the groundhog should let us have more winter than spring to start…yet we don’t need the groundhog to declare spring in this case. Sure, it's snowed! But look out the window again, folks! Is that real snow? I should say not. Barely any white! I'm afraid snow is not coming back. Unless it does, I'm saying goodbye to the winter we never had. Hopefully, there'll be an absolutely tremendous blizzard and the snow will go at least to our ankles.

Girls' Volleyball

By: Rani (Grade 5)

The girls’ volleyball team has been practicing for several weeks now and it’s time for the first game. They have been coming early in the morning to practice. Grades 4-6 are allowed to play but grade 4’s are not allowed to play in the tournament. The volleyball rules state that you have to wear knee pads, and there is no jewelry allowed. On Wednesday, January 20th they went to Niagara P.S.. for the first game. One of the participants made shiny silver head bands for each player.

Playground Ambassadors

Vests worn by the Playground Ambassadors

By: Leda and Elyssa (Grade 6)

Playground ambassadors are important because they help solve problems that other kids have.

Each playground ambassador group has 2 - 3 vests, a clip broad, a lunch bag with ice packs and bandages, and a bag with balls, jump ropes. The vests are orange with a bright yellow stripe. We have the clip broad for writing down problems.

The Playground ambassador groups have 1 or 2 days to go on duty. Each group has two experience Playground ambassadors and one trainee.

We got some quotes from Leda and Elyssa an experience Playground ambassadors. "I like to help kids with their problems," said Leda.  "I like helping my trainee learn how to solve problems," Elyssa said.

Look outside, it's exactly like this.

What's going to happen... too soon.

"My brother and I got an awesome new toboggan for Christmas and we never got to try it out this year." Says down-hearted sixth-grader, Lauren Vamos.

"I think winter should last until at least March break" Grade five teacher, Ms. Ling puts in. I guess not all adults want winter to end now and so soon. Numerous comments were made about the event like,  "It's sad.", "We never really got to have winter." and "The year's gone by so fast and it's our last year here at Hillcrest.”

       Boys Basketball Team

By: Con (Grade 6)

On January 20 Hillcrest played their first season game...J.R.R.  We won 23 to 22.  Then we played Forest Hill and won 41 to 15!!  After that we played a school called Allenby and won 28 to 15, and the last game of the season was McMurrich and we won 24 to 15  so that means.......... we made it to the playoffs !!!!!!

The team is very happy to try and get our first basketball banner for conference champions and city champions.  I think the reason we’re winning is all the great basket ball players, great coach and great spirit.

The Hillcrest basketball team practices every Tuesday and Wednesday morning and Friday at lunch and sometimes there are practices at recess so boys basketball team make sure to hear the announcements.

The team and Mr. Sternberg don’t know when the playoffs are and where there going to be played but we can’t wait.

Grade 6 Island School

The Island Natural Science school.

By: Larry (Grade 6)

I went to the Toronto Natural Island Science School with the two grade six classes 215 and 207. The teachers who came with us were Mr. Brinsmead, Mr. Sternberg, Ms. Poffenroth, and Ms. Whitfield. The Toronto Natural Island Science school is located on the Toronto Island. The reason that we went there is to support our science units. At the island school they have an environment that allows us to do a lot of stuff that we just could not do at Hillcrest.

The programs that we did were Flight, Andy Goldsworthy, Night Hike, Energy and Cooperative games. All of the programs we did there except for the cooperative games were outdoor programs and were all related to our science units. My favorite programs were Flight, Andy Goldsworthy and the Night Hike. The reasons that those were my favorite programs are because they were a lot of fun and I learned a lot of new things. In flight we learned about the forces of flight and got to feed chickadees. In the Andy Goldsworthy program we got to make art in the style of an artist named Andy Goldsworthy using only outdoor materials and in the night hike we learned about the story of the maze, we went to the maze, the peer and the city view. The only program I didn’t like was the Energy program. All we did for that program was look for environmental features of the island village. I found that extremely boring and I don’t think that it helped a single bit with the energy science unit we are doing right now.

During the day we also had a lot of time in our dorms. At the island school we ate three meals a day and one snack before bed. Most meals were alright but some were really disgusting. Even though there were some boring programs and bad food I still had fun at Island school and I wish to go there again!

Children Helping Children in   Devastated Country

Some of the devastation in Haiti

By: Lauren (Grade 6)

A few weeks ago on January 11, 2010 a very sad thing occured. There was a massive earthquake in Haiti, a small country south east of Cuba leaving the whole country in devastation. Two major fundraising societies stepped in to help rebuild the country. The Canadien Red Cross Society and Free the Children. Free the Children is an organization founded in 1995 by twelve year old Craig Kielburger.

One day when Craig was looking through the newspaper for the comics a headline caught his eye; “Battled Child Labour, Boy Twelve Murdered.” As he read it he was shocked. It was about how a twelve year old Pakistan boy named Iqbal Masih who had been sold into child labour at age four and escaped at age nine had been murdered for speaking up about children’s rights. At that moment Craig new he had to do something. So he brought the article into his grade seven class and asked who’d be willing to help. Eleven hands shot up and Free the Children was born.

A few months ago room 207 was studying Canada’s trading parteners. Part of this unit was child labour. To learn more about child labour we went on the Free the Children website. Two students, Lauren and Ian couldn’t help noticing the fundraising parts of this website. They talked to Mr. Brinsmead and Ms. Lerner and we decided to start a Free the Children campaign in our school. Mr. Brinsmead says, “I think it’s important to do fundraising because you can help people who are less fortunate then you.” Our first step to start this campaign was to call someone from Free the Children and get them to come to Hillcrest and talk to the students. The going was slow though and by the time someone came the earthquake had already struck. So we decided to, instead of doing regular fundraising, help Haiti too. The fundraising was a success. In less than two weeks we raised over $200 in pennies, nickles, dimes and quarters. We also raised twelve large garbage bags and three big boxes (or about five hundred) shoes for children in Haiti.

     Thanks Hillcrest, you’re amazing!
