Grade 6 students treading water at synchro in the pool for 5 minutes.

Synchro at Hillcrest

By Leda and Elyssa (Grade 6)

Synchro is a sport in the swimming pool. It is a combination of dance and gymnastics. The groups all move together at the same time so everyone is synchronized. Linda and Linda are teaching it on Thursday mornings between  7:50am – 8:45am. They will be doing it for the whole year. You perform when your group is ready. Your performance will be at a swim meet. You will earn one “H” point.  This is only available to the grade six students. The warm up includes stretching and lengths. You learn new moves once you accomplish one move. Synchro was not the first choice for the Linda’s until the students encouraged them to do it.  It is fun.

If you forget to put your garbage in the garbage, our playground will be disgusting.  Do you want that?  NO! Well do you?  If you want environmentally friendly everything, go to the store Eco-Existence. It has everything from a tiny lip gloss to a giant bed - cool!  All the products are eco- friendly.  It’s on 21 Vaughan Road.

Warriors Into The Wild is about a ordinary house cat named Rusty who heard stories about big strong wild cats that live in the forest that sleeps under the stars and hunt themselves fresh juicy mouse instead of the dry nasty food that his owners give him. One day Rusty decided to go into the forest to see if what his friends told him was true. On his way into the forest Rusty got attacked by a wild cat named Graypaw. The two cats fought until they realized they did know who each other were. When Graypaw realized that Rusty was a pet cat he was awfully impressed by his fighting skills so he welcomes him into one of the cat clans known as Thunderclan. At first Rusty was really excited but then he realizes that life as a wild cat is tougher then he thought and soon enough he runs himself into a whole pile of hard dangerous problems.

Warriors Into the Wild is written by Kate Cary, Cherith Baldry, Victoria Holmes and Tui Sutherland who are all pen named Erin Hunter. The four authors have also created a new series of books called Seekers. Into the Wild came out in 2003 and is the first book of the first Warriors series. There are also seven more Warriors series called the New Prophecy, Power of three, Omen of stars, Warriors Magna Graystripes Adventure, Warriors Magna Tigerclaw and Sasha, Warriors super edition and Warriors and Field guide. There are also more Warriors series books coming out in late 2009 and 2010.

I would say that Warriors is a very good book. It has a lot of action and exciting moments. I would recommend this book for Boys and Girls aged eight to thirteen.

STICKS AND STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES BUT WORDS MAY ALSO HURT ME

By: Claire and N'dea (Grade 5)

It’s true. Words can hurt even more then broken bones. Words can make you feel small and will never escape your mind. I think you know what we’re talking about BULLYING! You may not know, but bullying happens to EVERYONE and it’s a bumpy ride. We, the Peace Patrollers have gone through it many times before. We know how painful it is and so do many other people who have been bullied. Before we wrote this we felt scared, alone and worried. This is how most people feel when they get bullied. Now we have each other to stand up and support each other all the time! Follow these few steps and you’ll be on you’re way to a GREAT year!

Step #1:

Find a friend who will stand by you all the time!

Step #2:

Know the difference between tattle - taleing and reporting? Tattle – taleing is when you tell on some one for doing something that is very minor like for example I saw Shelly chewing gum in class last week! That does not harm you in anyway. However, reporting is when you tell on somebody for bothering you, physically or verbally. It is ok to report but always tell the truth.

Step#3:

Feel bad for the bully. They’re the ones that have to suffer because you don’t like them and other people probably don’t like them either.

Step #4:

Don’t retaliate. That means if someone hits you don’t hit them back. Go report to a teacher or an adult you trust and let them handle it.

Step #5:

STAND UP if you want the bully to stop get a friend to help you. No one wants to be pushed around ever and you never should be no matter who you are!

STAND UP!

 Stand up to bullying

Peace!

 GIRLS BASKETBALL

By:Luke, Jonah, and Noah (Grade 4/5)

The girls travelling basketball team consists of:  Megan, Alex, Sarah, Halle, Julite, Feven, Micaela, Kira, Maddie, Halley, and, the coach  Mr. Sternberg.   Mr. Sternberg said that the team was hard working and becoming a very good basketball team.   When asked what he looks for in a player when he selects them for the travelling team, Mr. Sternberg answered simply by saying: "Positive attitude, and hard work."  When asked what aspects of the game the team focuses on in their practices Mr. Sternberg said that they mainly focus on running, and proper technique in everything.   When some of the girls on the basketball team were asked whether they enjoyed being on the girls basketball team they all answered yes. Juliet said she enjoyed being on the girls basketball team because it was a chance to make new friends and enjoy the game.  Many girls on the basketball team agreed with Juliet and said they would join the basketball team next year. The team played their first game November 12th.

As many of us know the Olympic torch has begun its relay across Canada.  Some interesting facts are that every torch runner gets to keep his or her torch after running with it and the torch was designed by the Montreal based company Bombardier. The torch will be carried through Toronto December 17-19.  The relay is the longest domestic torch relay in history at 45 000 km. 12 000 runners will carry the torch on its 100 day long trip across Canada.

New Books Bring New Fun!

By: Georgia (Grade 6)

Hillcrest School has over 12,000 books and it’s no secret how we got so many. Ms. Poffenroth said that, “We have so many books from people coming in and we’re so lucky that kids make so many suggestions.” This way, when Ms.Poffenroth goes to buy books she has so many requests on new books for her to buy. How do we keep 12, 000 books in order? We have library helpers. Wonderful, glorious library helpers that consist of boys and girls who work on their own recess time to help organize our library. Some of the new books in our library are the new Melanie Watt books, the Mysterious Benedict Society (Books 1-3), the whole Warrior series, the all new Amulet book 2, and Rainbow Fairies! The most popular series currently in our library is Rainbow Fairies, Diary of a Wimpy Kid (the fourth book), and the Amulet series. So look out for these new great books that are in our library!

By:Lauren (Grade 6)

On January 11-13, 2010 the Grade 6's will be going to the Toronto Natural Science School, located on Centre Island, Lake Ontario.     Accompanying them will be Mr. Brinsmead (grade 6 teacher, 207), Mr. Sternberg (other grade 6 teacher, 215), and 2 surprise female teachers.

Mr. Brinsmead said: “This will be an excellent educational experiance that all students should have. The only thing they could do to improve is to go back to having it for a full week instead of 3 days!”

This will be a unique learning opportunity for the grade 6's who will participate in science-based activities and eco-art aswell as a variety of co’oporative games and many hikes under the supervision of the amazing staff.

The grade 6's will sleep for 2 nights in seperate girls and boys dormitories with 2 teachers sleeping in an ajoining room in case anyone needs help at night. They will be eating breakfast, lunch and dinner together in a dining hall.

The grade 6's will be sorted into 4 clans: the Raven Clan, the Fox clan, the Bear Clan and the Spider Clan. They will do most of their activities and eat their meals with their clan, as well as a variety of chores such as setting the tables in the dining hall before meals and cleaning the barn. (They must clean the barn in return for the farmers letting them use it.)

This will be an incredible experience for the grade 6's and I’m sure everyone will love it!
